Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
You and were not made to worship. Prepositions matter.
God made humanity in his image. Because we are made to be like God, we were made worshipping. We can’t help but worship. Being human is to be a worshipper. This is because worship is the continuous outpouring of all that I am and have to a chosen or choosing God. We tend to think of worship as if it were simply the singing that we do during our weekly meetings and worship service. But worship isn’t merely singspiration. Worship happens when we pour ourselves out to someone or something. We do this because we are made in the image of God.
God, within the Trinity, is always giving of himself to the other persons in the Trinity. You see it and know it when the Father sends the Son and the Spirit. The Son exalts the Father and sends the Spirit. The Spirit exalts the Father and the Son. Each person in the Godhead –Father, Son and Spirit – are unified in their goodness and giving nature. They give of themselves for our benefit.
So too, we worship because we can’t help it. We give ourselves to our Netflix shows; we devote time to our favorite sports team(s); we celebrate and rejoice when our political party takes control of the federal government. We are always worshipping.
The only one who is worthy of our devotion and constant worship is the Lord, our God, our Maker. And because others don’t worship him, we tell them about Him so that they too may have life and joy.
As you prepare for worship this weekend consider the following: to whom or to what have you given yourself this week? Why do you worship? And why must we worship the Lord?
