Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Generally, I don’t mind listening to Christian Radio. You can hear K-love on 104.9 or 107.3 on the radio in our area. It plays music that provide good reminders about who God is and who we are. But I don’t always like what I hear on Christian Radio.
For example, one station promotional statement, which lasts less than 10 seconds played this afternoon when I was just pulling into to my driveway. It had some noise, like from a city, in the background. I forget what it said initially about the noise of the world. But then it said, “The world off, K-love on.” And there was a sigh of relief.
Now, I understand the intention of such promotional material. It is intending to communicate that listening to K-love (Christian Radio) can provide peace in the midst of a crazy busy life. It is easy to focus on the circumstances of life, and K-love can help provide a re-orientation to focus on our Lord.
But the pithy statement implies that we need to escape the world. Or that the world is something we can just shut out for a period of time. To me, this hints of privilege, or in the words of teenagers these days, “It’s giving privilege.” Only those with privilege are able to “shut off the world” for a moment. Sure, we don’t want to be overwhelmed by what is going on in the world, but the feeling that we long to be free from it points to eschatological reality. The solution isn’t Christian music. The solution is the return of our Lord Jesus Christ when he will come to judge the living and the dead. Moreover, the Lord doesn’t call us to escape the world, He goes before us and with us into it so that we may be salt and light to a world that needs healing and understanding. Moreover, God loves the world – the people who are set in rebellion against him, which is why He sent Jesus to be the Savior of the world. Shouldn’t we also love the people around us, rather than tune them out?
Yes, we take time to gather for worship. Yes, we need time to refresh and recharge. But don’t trust the idea that implies that we can just ignore the world because we feel like it. Turn to the Lord, yes. Love each other, our neighbors, and even our enemies, also yes. For the Glory of God alone.
